The People of the Ice and Snow will fight like Vikings on their way to Valhalla.
The old Norse believed in several different possible afterlives, Valhalla being but one of them where half of all slain in combat would go, with the other half going to Fólkvangr. Would be a bit strange of them to believe in several possible afterlives if they were ‘so obsessed’ with one.
Valhalla was however very popular amongst those who went into battle, be it soldiers or people going viking. This is because it was believed to be a great honor to be chosen by Odin, Valhalla itself being described as very pleasant, and would mean that they would get to fight for the gods during Ragnarök. All in all a pretty sweet deal compared to living in a meadow for the rest of your existence or being reborn somewhere else.
Norse belief
In Norse belief, which afterlife you recieved was mostly determined by how you died, not necessarily how you lived. The possibility of being invited to Valhalla was more of a last huzzah, a win-win situation if you will, than a lifelong dedication. Compare this to modern religions where people dedicate their entire lives to trying to secure the afterlife they want, and I don't see how the Norse’s view of Valhalla could be seen as obsessive.
